Notes on Free Style Combat, 32 Forms

Free Style Combat, 32 Forms is a routine stressing vigor, developed by the ancestral masters of Taiji Quan on the basis of many years' experience in practicing boxing and actual combat. Vigor means that when one exerts force, internal power and external form are integrated, consciousness and physical energy work simultaneously, and one's striking force is maximized.

The way force is exerted is unique in Taiji Quan. Not only the hands, fists, elbows, feet and knees, but also the shoulders, chest, hips and other major joints can strike with force. The Theory of Taiji Quan says, "One's skill can be said to be outstanding if five yin and five yang are in place, and one errs not in yin or yang. With outstanding skill, every move gives rise to a Taiji, and when Taiji works, void is the result. Any spot in contact with the opponent can be a striking point; this is too mysterious for me to realize."

This routine is a set of force-exerting Taiji boxing skills which embodies both positive-direction and reverse-direction action involving various body parts, orientations and postures. This routine enables one to master the way force surges in Taiji Quan and raise one's level of proficiency through practice.

Taiji Quan is an ancient school of boxing peculiar to China. Many relevant things cannot be elucidated in writing and must be taught in person by the teacher, who provides oral explanation.
